Blog: April 2012

12th April 2012

After a freezing start to the week, Melbourne pulled out some sunshine :-)

We decided to go to the Werribee zoo, which is not far from our house. We’ve been lots of times and they both really like it :-)

We had a fun afternoon. The place was really crowed – school holidays!

11th April 2012

Another visit to RCH to see Dr Peter. Took Lela along too to keep us company :-)))))

The blood machine wasn’t working, so we had to wait until they had sent the blood to another hospital and get the results back.

Had a good chat to Peter about some other options we might consider. Unfortunately, none of them are available in Australia :-( If we ever do decide to go overseas, the expense will be huge!!! But we are not ruling it out. For now, we have to wait until June for another scan and we can decide after that :-)))

Rafael’s test came back good and we were outta there!!! Hb = 110 and platelets up to 107 :-)

On the way home, we picked up Rafael’s school friend and bought him home for a play!! Rafael was so surprised as I hadn’t told him about it :-)))

9th April 2012

Hair cut day :-( Rafael has so much hair, and it’s still falling out  :-(((

Our friend Sonia came around to give him a trim. We promised Rafael that if he let us cut it shorter, he could get a new Skylander!

Sonia could have kept chopping all day! So much hair LOL. Rafael wouldn’t let her cut much off around his ears, but she managed to cut a lot off the back, sort of layers. It’s quite thin on top, we can see his scalp and part lines  :-(

He wasn’t happy afterwards and said “I look ugly now”  I told him that is impossible!!!!

8th April 2012

Wow!! The Easter Bunny is crazyyyyyy!!! He left SO many eggs for Gabriela and Rafa, and they were scattered all over the house!!

In the afternoon we went to see The Lorax, Rafa didn’t want to go, but once there, he did manage to enjoy himself ;-)))

6th April 2012

Happy Easter everyone!!

We stayed at home today and enjoyed a nice seafood lunch :-)

Gabriela tasted crab while we were at Costco and asked me to buy some for her.

We enjoyed crab and prawns, while the boys stuck to their fish ;-)

4th April 2012

Rafael and Gabriela were asked to take part in a photo shoot with Rebecca Judd for Camp Quality. It was at a Vue de Monde, which is on the 55th floor of the Rialto tower in Melbourne.

The view across Melbourne was spectacular. No idea how much it would cost to eat there!! Lot’s, I bet.

Rebecca (Bec) was very lovely, but extremely thin and boney! Gabriela even said “Eeeww” about feeling her ribs when she cuddled her goodbye ;-)

They had lot’s of fun, mucking around, playing with balloons and giving Bec “bunny ears”!!

3rd April 2012

We arrived at RCH at 9 am and left at 6 pm  Thankfully Gabriela was at a sleep over, or she’d have been VERY bored!!

We knew that Dr Peter was at Monash today, so when the nurse told me that Rafael’s red cell count was only 78, I asked her to call him. It took a while, but he said that it seems Rafael’s counts aren’t going to recover on their own, and to go ahead with a transfusion.

Rafael was so upset that he’d have to spend the day there :-((

Thursdays are the busiest days in Day Oncology, and it was no different today :-( We had to wait until 12 before they even put Angel cream on Rafa’s arms and then another hour until a cannula was inserted and more blood taken to get a cross match!!

Transfusion finally started about 2:30, Rafael had lot’s of questions, as he doesn’t even remember anything from his earlier treatments ;-) “Why do I have to have someone else’s blood? Why do people donate blood? How do they get it out? “ etc…

Rafael spent the whole afternoon watching TV. I couldn’t get him to eat much either. Daddy came for a visit during his lunch break :-))

Towards the end, the nurse sped the pump up a little and we were able to go home . Boy – that’s when the “red cordial” kicked in!! Rafa was running around the house with lot’s of energy all night!
